If you look at an orchid, you could always see that it grows in a pot. While you may not notice the pot right away because of being captivated by the enchanting flower of the orchid, the orchid pot actually plays an important role in the overall health of the orchid. You may not realize it but even the pot has several classes. This is because each pot has certain characteristics that would complement a certain type of orchid in a way. One orchid pot may not be suitable for one variety, but another kind might be a good choice. You have to learn the importance of orchid pots in ensuring the health of your orchids so that when you do repotting, you would have a clear choice of the pot that you are going to use.

While there are several types of orchid pots, two of the most commonly used are those made from terracotta clay, and those made from plastic. Most orchids normally strive in any of these pots but a closer look at each one wouldn’t hurt. There might still be some things that you must consider in choosing the right one.

If you want to buy plastic orchid pots, choose those pots which are light. These plastic pots should have a few drainage holes for excess water to pass through. Lightweight plastic pots are suited for areas where there is not much wind that could blow it over. Usually, those who prefer to place their orchids indoors choose this kind of pot.

You also need to determine how the orchid pot will dry up after watering. Ascertaining that the plastic pot is thick enough so as to prevent any premature breaking would also help your orchid since whatever damage the pot will suffer, the plant would also be affected directly. The plastic orchid pot must be light in color. This is an important aid in determining whether the pot would heat up when exposed to strong sunlight or not. Light colored pots don’t heat up easily compared to dark colored ones.

The terracotta clay orchid pot is heavier compared to the plastic pots. These pots should actually be heavy since they are normally bought for their stability. They only have one drainage hole, but sometimes there is also a need to add more drainage holes to its side.

Epiphytic orchids are grown in terracotta orchid pots. This pot is very ideal to use with these kinds of drought-tolerant orchids since they’re not that prone to water logging. The Cymbidia orchid is one which is well-suited to be grown in terracotta pots.

So before buying any orchid pot, make sure that you know the characteristics of the pot and the orchid that you will be planting. Once these are in harmony, you are assured of healthy blooming orchids.
